Chart Pattern Definitions: A Reproducibility Project
Test whether anchors, intervals and non-examples make a chart explanation reproducible without later price information.
A drawing must have an input identity
This is an invented drawing exercise, not a live technical-analysis signal. Supply an imaginary sequence with numbered observations and declare whether the display uses a linear or another stated scale. Ask the learner to draw a proposed range or line before showing later observations. The drawing is an output of a definition applied to inputs. Its visual neatness cannot establish that the definition is complete or that the method predicts the market.
Write down the allowed anchors, the sampling interval and what information was available when the line was chosen. A rule that says use the important points is incomplete unless importance has a reproducible meaning in this task. If the original source leaves discretion, record it as discretion. Do not claim that a classroom simplification is an exact private-course rule or an independently optimised trading parameter.
Compare two reasonable readers
Give the same source observations and written definition to two readers. Do not give them the completed illustration. Retain both drawings and compare which anchors they used. A difference is not automatically a reader failure. It may identify an ambiguous term or a convention that the first explanation silently assumed. The useful question is which missing instruction would allow another reader to reproduce the intended object.
For a deliberate error, let one reader move an anchor after seeing the later continuation. Ask that reader to explain why the new drawing is not the same initial test. A retrospective revision can be appropriate as analysis of new information, but it must have a new version and date. It cannot quietly replace the original drawing and then serve as proof of what was known earlier.
A non-example belongs beside the example
Construct a visually similar invented sequence that fails one declared condition. The learner should explain the failed condition before seeing the continuation. This stops pattern naming from becoming a habit of accepting every attractive chart. A non-example can be more informative than another winning illustration because it exposes the boundary the definition is supposed to enforce.
Change the display scale in a separate version and ask which geometric impressions change. Keep scale-dependent observations distinct from scale-independent facts. If a proposed angle or distance depends on the chosen axes, that dependency belongs in the artifact. An impressive line on a chart does not justify attributing a numerical geometry rule to a historical author without an original text and convention.
Resolve vocabulary through the original source
A trendline, box, contraction, stage or wave label may be used differently by different educators. The selected source needs author, edition or page/video identity and the relevant definition. A later interpreter can be useful, but its account should be attributed as that interpreter's account. A famous name in a catalogue is not evidence that the publication inspected every original work or private course.
When the source is missing, retain the concept as a research question and use a learner-owned classroom definition. State that boundary before presenting the exercise. This preserves useful topic coverage without turning a plausible remembered parameter into machine-readable authority. The learning project can continue on reproducibility while the author-specific attribution remains unresolved.
Make the exit task portable
The final package should contain observations, display convention, written definition, first drawing, second-reader drawing, non-example and revision explanation. Give another reader a fresh sequence with one ambiguous anchor and ask which questions remain. A complete answer can say that the definition needs refinement. It should not force a confident classification when the input or source does not support one.
To compare courses, ask whether the selected programme provides this kind of definition and feedback. A polished annotated video can illustrate an idea without assessing a learner's independent ability to reproduce it. Support ownership, submission format and access period require current offer terms. This project measures a narrow learning skill; it is not an accredited qualification, a current trade recommendation or proof of a strategy's profitability.
Artifact Packet
| Learning artifact | What to retain |
|---|---|
| Input packet | Invented numbered sequence and declared display scale. |
| Definition record | Allowed anchors, interval and unresolved discretion. |
| Blind redraw | Second reader receives no final annotated chart. |
| Counterexample | Lookalike that fails one declared condition. |
| Revision rule | Later anchor changes retain a separate version. |
| Source gap | Exact authored definition needed for attribution. |
| Exit artifact | Reproducible reasoning or a justified ambiguity report. |
