Systematic Trading Study: Development, Tests and Independent Evidence
A non-actionable project for distinguishing software correctness, historical selection and independent evaluation.
State the experiment before seeing the attractive result
Use an invented dataset and call the task CLASSROOM-SYSTEM. Specify inputs, target, observation time and the question being tested. The goal is to explain an experiment, not to build a deployable trading model or claim an institution's private method. A familiar strategy name cannot supply its missing data, parameters, portfolio policy or execution convention.
Keep a log of the definitions and variants considered. If the learner changes a setting after inspecting outcomes, record that change and the information that motivated it. A later selected result may be useful for development, but it must not be described as independent evidence merely because it looks cleaner than the rejected alternatives.
Deliberately insert a future-only field
Give the invented dataset one field that becomes available after the intended observation point. Ask whether the learner can use it in the initial decision. The correct explanation identifies the timing mismatch. A program may compute successfully while answering a different, non-causal question from the one declared.
The error case uses the future-only field, produces a pleasing result and labels it validation. The correction removes or separately routes that field and explains why the earlier result cannot support the original question. A successful software run and a justified research conclusion are different artifacts. Preserving the error is useful evidence of learning, not a reason to hide the initial attempt.
Separate rule conformity from strategy evidence
A unit test can show that code follows a declared calculation on supplied examples. It does not independently establish that the resulting strategy will perform in another environment. A synthetic fixture is especially useful for finding software errors while remaining explicitly invented. Its successful outcome is not an actual-account observation.
Ask the learner to list which question each test answers: arithmetic, source identity, timing, implementation conformity or evaluation beyond development. Do not combine the tests into one unexplained readiness score. Missing costs, unavailable instruments and assumed fills remain separate research limitations. A price touching a desired level does not supply an actual broker response.
Keep rejected experiments in the record
Retain the original dataset identity, assumptions, variants, first result and correction. If one version was chosen because its outcome looked best, that selection belongs in the development history. An independent evaluation needs a separately identified information boundary and cannot be manufactured by relabelling the same observations.
For a selected course, ask how these distinctions are taught and assessed. A library of impressive backtests can be motivating without supplying a complete experimental method. A paid programme may provide a useful explanation without proving a profitable student account. A firm biography cannot authorise a claim that a simple classroom model reconstructs its proprietary research.
Give the learner a fresh failure mode
The exit case uses a different invented dataset with one absent observation and a tempting later replacement. The learner should explain why the replacement changes the information set. Ask for a bounded conclusion about what was tested rather than a prediction about a live instrument. A valid answer can identify that independent evaluation remains incomplete.
Save first attempt, timing error, correction, variant log and fresh-case reasoning. This project is an educational record, not production certification, model promotion or a subscriber performance study. It requires no paid compute, broker account or operational deployment. Its value is the learner's ability to distinguish software correctness from evidence that addresses the declared research question.
