Ed Seykota: Source-Scoped Study Note

Source limits and trading psychology. An editorial study assignment with explicit source limits, not a hidden rulebook.

12 October 2026 / public curricula and original study procedures

What the source can support

The author's FAQ identifies the Trading Tribe and explicitly limits the advice and system-parameter claims it makes. This note does not reprint its protected question-and-answer archive.

Original exercise for this learning question

Separate an observation about your own decision process from a request for a universal market rule. Write an error description and the original evidence needed to inspect it, without diagnosing another person or promising that psychology fixes strategy performance.

Work without a live account. Record the original reference, the observation boundary and the first answer before examining a later result. When a definition is unclear, mark the uncertainty; do not supply a favourable fact from hindsight or attribute your own invented parameter to the author.

The distinction to explain

A reflective learning exercise is not a clinical intervention, a performance audit or a published parameter set for an automated system.

Artifact and transfer review

Learner-owned reflection, evidence boundary and next educational question.

Retain the baseline and correction as separate artifacts. For a fresh task, explain what was supplied, what you assumed and what remains unobserved. This review concerns your understanding of an evidence boundary, not the original trader's current performance or a reproduction of a private system.

Source Identity

Original operator, author or publisher reference

The scope above identifies whether the reference is an authored resource, provider interpretation, institutional description or catalogue identity. It does not imply paid access, a new account audit or a complete modern method.

Learning Concepts and Fresh Cases

A trend-following concept describes how observations can inform a rule, while a full system also specifies exits, sizing, portfolio constraints and missing-data handling. Psychological reflection is another learning object. It cannot be used to fill gaps in the mechanical definition.

Create two fictional trend definitions using the same invented observations. State why their classifications differ and which parameter choices belong to your classroom exercise. Preserve both versions rather than selecting the one with the most favourable continuation and declaring that version the author's rule.

The original FAQ is a source for its own discussion, not a universal personalised instruction. Ask what exact original record supports any claimed numerical setting. Your exit artifact should include a complete-system gap list and a distinction between understanding a rule and independently validating a strategy outside the development process.

Retained Vocabulary Reading Trail

Exponential moving average crossovers, channel breakout systems, systematic trend following, portfolio diversification, risk management, trading psychology.

This vocabulary preserves the earlier topic coverage. It is a list of research leads, not a verified private rulebook. Any numerical setting or author-specific parameter needs its original definition and scope before being used or attributed.
