Ray Dalio: Source-Scoped Study Note

Authored principles and economic explanations. An editorial study assignment with explicit source limits, not a hidden rulebook.

12 October 2026 / public curricula and original study procedures

What the source can support

The author's site lists books, videos and separate courses. A reading source is not access to Bridgewater's proprietary portfolio construction or a formal assessed programme.

Original exercise for this learning question

Select an actual economic explanation and map its variables, assumptions and observations. Write an alternative scenario and the original data needed to discriminate between them. Keep your exercise separate from a claim about the firm's current allocation.

Work without a live account. Record the original reference, the observation boundary and the first answer before examining a later result. When a definition is unclear, mark the uncertainty; do not supply a favourable fact from hindsight or attribute your own invented parameter to the author.

The distinction to explain

A framework for discussing a macro environment is not a personalised portfolio or guaranteed all-weather result.

Artifact and transfer review

Named source, variable map, dated evidence and learner-authored alternative.

Retain the baseline and correction as separate artifacts. For a fresh task, explain what was supplied, what you assumed and what remains unobserved. This review concerns your understanding of an evidence boundary, not the original trader's current performance or a reproduction of a private system.

Source Identity

Original operator, author or publisher reference

The scope above identifies whether the reference is an authored resource, provider interpretation, institutional description or catalogue identity. It does not imply paid access, a new account audit or a complete modern method.

Learning Concepts and Fresh Cases

An economic explanation and a proprietary institutional allocation are different objects. Variables such as growth, inflation and financing conditions require a defined measurement period and source. A conceptual quadrant does not itself specify an investable portfolio.

Construct two fictional economic scenarios and map the relationships you propose. Name the original data needed and a possible observation that weakens each scenario. Keep any allocation illustration explicitly separate from the author's or firm's actual holdings.

Retain risk-parity, all-weather, economic-machine and decision-process vocabulary as original-reading leads. A published principle is not access to Bridgewater's private implementation. The project should expose variables, assumptions and evidence boundaries, without promising protection in every environment or treating a book as a formal assessed course.

Retained Vocabulary Reading Trail

Risk parity, All-Weather portfolio, 4-quadrant economic model, the Economic Machine, radical transparency, idea meritocracy.

This vocabulary preserves the earlier topic coverage. It is a list of research leads, not a verified private rulebook. Any numerical setting or author-specific parameter needs its original definition and scope before being used or attributed.
