Warren Buffett: Source-Scoped Study Note

Shareholder letters as original reading. An editorial study assignment with explicit source limits, not a hidden rulebook.

12 October 2026 / public curricula and original study procedures

What the source can support

Berkshire's archive supplies original shareholder letters. A company letter has a business and reporting context, not the entitlements of a retail trading course.

Original exercise for this learning question

Choose a dated letter and separate a reported business fact, management interpretation and your own learning question. Identify what later information was unavailable at publication. Do not convert a company discussion into a current buy recommendation.

Work without a live account. Record the original reference, the observation boundary and the first answer before examining a later result. When a definition is unclear, mark the uncertainty; do not supply a favourable fact from hindsight or attribute your own invented parameter to the author.

The distinction to explain

A historic business outcome cannot certify that a modern reader reproduced the decision process or would achieve the same account result.

Artifact and transfer review

Letter/date, fact/interpretation map and temporal limitation.

Retain the baseline and correction as separate artifacts. For a fresh task, explain what was supplied, what you assumed and what remains unobserved. This review concerns your understanding of an evidence boundary, not the original trader's current performance or a reproduction of a private system.

Source Identity

Original operator, author or publisher reference

The scope above identifies whether the reference is an authored resource, provider interpretation, institutional description or catalogue identity. It does not imply paid access, a new account audit or a complete modern method.

Learning Concepts and Fresh Cases

A shareholder letter has a dated reporting and business context. A management statement, a reported number and the reader's interpretation are different evidence layers. Later information must not be silently inserted into an earlier analysis.

Choose an actual dated letter and identify one reported fact, one interpretation and one unanswered business question. Then use a fictional company to apply the distinction. State what additional primary records would be needed before drawing a valuation conclusion.

Retain moats, owner earnings, competence, margin-of-safety and capital-allocation questions. A famous historical outcome is not a measurement of this reader's skill. The learning artifact should include source date, reporting period and assumptions rather than turn a business discussion into a present-day recommendation or promise of compounding results.

Retained Vocabulary Reading Trail

Economic moats, owner earnings, margin of safety, circle of competence, Mr. Market, intrinsic value, compounding, capital allocation.

This vocabulary preserves the earlier topic coverage. It is a list of research leads, not a verified private rulebook. Any numerical setting or author-specific parameter needs its original definition and scope before being used or attributed.
