William O'Neil: Source-Scoped Study Note

Public rule-writing discussion and attribution limits. An editorial study assignment with explicit source limits, not a hidden rulebook.

12 October 2026 / public curricula and original study procedures

What the source can support

TraderLion's authored rule-writing article discusses the importance of a personal complete process and cautions against impersonating favourite traders. It is not the original O'Neil book or a verified reproduction of CAN SLIM.

Original exercise for this learning question

Locate the actual original O'Neil publication before attributing a detailed CAN SLIM rule. In the meantime, build a learner-owned checklist of selection, timing, risk and review questions and explicitly label it your exercise.

Work without a live account. Record the original reference, the observation boundary and the first answer before examining a later result. When a definition is unclear, mark the uncertainty; do not supply a favourable fact from hindsight or attribute your own invented parameter to the author.

The distinction to explain

A later educator's reference to O'Neil supports that educator's discussion, not every rule or performance claim previously attached to the name.

Artifact and transfer review

Original publication request, learner-owned checklist and attribution boundary.

Retain the baseline and correction as separate artifacts. For a fresh task, explain what was supplied, what you assumed and what remains unobserved. This review concerns your understanding of an evidence boundary, not the original trader's current performance or a reproduction of a private system.

Source Identity

Original operator, author or publisher reference

The scope above identifies whether the reference is an authored resource, provider interpretation, institutional description or catalogue identity. It does not imply paid access, a new account audit or a complete modern method.

Learning Concepts and Fresh Cases

A combined company-and-chart framework requires distinct sources for financial observations, market comparison and pattern definitions. A methodology acronym cannot provide missing reporting periods or identify every exact original rule.

Construct an invented candidate and a lookalike that is missing a required field. Explain which parts of the research can proceed and which remain unresolved. Keep relative-strength comparison, company evidence and chart timing in different columns.

Retain CAN SLIM, bases, follow-through, distribution and market-direction vocabulary as original-publication research leads. The linked later educator discussion is not the original O'Neil rulebook. The exit artifact should include an edition request, field definitions and learner-owned adaptation, without presenting a recalled acronym or historic winner as independently verified instruction.

Retained Vocabulary Reading Trail

CAN SLIM 7-factor system, cup-with-handle pattern, double bottom base, flat base, follow-through day, distribution day, relative strength line, market direction analysis.

This vocabulary preserves the earlier topic coverage. It is a list of research leads, not a verified private rulebook. Any numerical setting or author-specific parameter needs its original definition and scope before being used or attributed.
